Leo Svirsky

Leo Svirsky is a pianist, composer, and accordionist currently based in the Hague. He is active in new and improvised music scenes, as well as interpreting the standard piano repertoire. He has taken master classes with many leading musicians including Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Lang Lang, Ursula Oppens, the Juilliard Quartet, the Zurich Trio, Boris Berman, Charles Rosen, Arie Vardi, Leslie Howard, and Christian Wolff.

 

He has premiered new works by composers such as Michael Pisaro, Peter Adriaansz, Cornelis de Bondt, David Pocknee, Maya Verlaak, and Robert Blatt.  As an improviser, he has collaborated with among others, Raoul van der Weide, Onno Govaert, Katt Hernandez, Jaap Blonk, Anne La Berge, Jasper Stadhouders, Marshall Allen, John Berndt, and Veryan Weston. His performance of Veryan Weston’s large-scale open form piece Tessellations was recently released by the British improv label Emanem.

 

His own composition “Songs in the Key of Survival” was released on Ehse Records. Festival appearances include Sonic Circuits (DC), High Zero (Baltimore), Breaking the Waves (Utrecht), Peter the Great (Groningen), and Klangraum (Dusseldorf).

 

He is currently studying at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague with Ellen Corver and Cornelius De Bondt. He also studied privately with composer Antoine Beuger. Previous teachers include Rian de Waal, Santiago Rodriguez, and Irena Orlov (piano), Lawrence Moss, and Frances Mckay (composition).
